Japanese is my latest obsession.

It’s tasty, interesting and unique and I’m just in love it so you could imagine how ecstatic I was to be finally visiting Ebi Fine Foods in Footscray. After reading such great reviews on this humble little eatery, I had pretty high expectations.

It definitely did not disappoint.

Located on a quiet stretch on Essex St, (in fact the whole street is rather tranquil) it’s a fantastic place to chill in the sun if you are lucky enough to call dibs on one of the only two tables outside.

Crab & potato croquettes, $2.5 ea

Crab & potato croquettes, $2.5 ea

Crab and potato croquettes were nice but nothing out of the ordinary- perfectly crunchy on the outside but maybe a little too soft and ‘mushy’ on the inside. The Japanese BBQ sauce on top definitely complimented the dish.

Tonkatsu Bento, $17

Tonkatsu Bento, $17

I made the mistake of looking at what must have been an old menu picture on Urbanspoon so what I thought was going to be a $12.50 bento turned out to actually be $17. I wasn’t too surprised though, it would have been too good to be true! Japanese is definitely one of the more pricier cuisines out there.

Pork Tonkatsu

I couldn’t complain, I enjoyed my bento very much although if I could be picky I’d say my pork katsu was a touch dry and needed a little more sauce. Other than that it was great!

Bento Salad

The picked salad surprisingly was the stand out for me and went really well with the rice.

Fish Three Ways Bento

3 Fish 3 Ways Bento, $18

My boyfriend loved his Fish Three Ways Bento- I managed to try a bit before he gobbled it all up and I thought the crispy whitebait was delish! The tempura-like batter gave it a nice crunch.

There was one thing on the menu that had really caught my eye and that was the Tofu Cheesecake. I couldn’t leave without trying it- it just sounded so interesting!

Boy was I happy to have given it a go because this was hands down the highlight of the entire meal for me. Soft, silky and delicate, it had the texture of a pavlova only smoother and it was absolutely delicious! The coffee syrup just gave it that extra oomph and it just melted in my mouth. I’m still dreaming about it!

One of the best desserts I have had in a long time. And to top it off we had such a friendly waitress which was only a bonus to our enjoyable experience here.

Must have dishes:

– Any of the bento boxes
– Tofu Cheesecake
– Veggie balls

Tips & Tricks:

  • Seating is limited (only 2 or 3 tables indoors) so visiting at off-peak times would be your safest bet if you want to dine in
  • Call in advance for take-away as this place gets super busy super quick!
