There’s a new fast food chain taking over Melbourne. A modern day adaptation of classic Vietnamese dishes, Roll’d Vietnamese Street Food is popping up all over town with it’s latest Highpoint addition now open for business.
Having tried their ‘Roll’d Soldiers’ at the Chadstone store, I was pretty estatic that a store was opening close to home. And I happened to be at Highpoint doing some last minute Christmas shopping on opening night so I was lucky enough to score a free ‘B’ or Bun-a traditional noodle salad served with meat of your choice.
With food flying out of the store I wasn’t too sure what to expect in terms of quality but I was pleasantly surprised. Aside from a few sad looking bits of coriander, the rest of the dish was fresh, full of flavour and a good portion. The pork was delicious and the crackling was exactly what it should be- crisp and crunchy.
The Vegetarian spring rolls were tasty but they were overcooked and didn’t have the smooth exterior of a traditional spring roll. The tofu was also pretty dry and lacking in flavour.
If you do visit Roll’d I definitely recommend the Prawn & Pork Roll’d Soldiers with their Hoisin sauce- they’re my favourite thing so far. Yet to try the pho but I have heard from a friend that it was pretty good and I do like the idea of being able to have it as a ‘side’ or as part of a meal deal.
I’m not yet game enough to try their bánh mì or pork roll- I just can’t justify spending $7.2 on something worth almost half the price in Footscray or St. Albans!
It may have to wait for my next pay check…
