The scarcity in the number of Japanese restaurants in the Western Surburbs is pretty disappointing. So when Izumi opened its doors late last year not far from home I was estatic!
Located a few doors down from the ever-busy Caroline Thai, Izumi is in a good location on the boulevard and is very modern and spacious inside. Unfortunately it’s wasted space as I have never seen more than four tables occupied whenever I have dined in or driven past.
And for some strange reason they always seem to have their blinds down which makes them look closed all the time!
The food at best is pretty average and expensive for what it is. An Izumi Bento (above) will set you back $23.80, yet I have seen a lot cheaper boxes at much higher quality than what you are given here. At Chiba in Moonee Ponds, a $20 bento box includes tempura and sashimi!
In the short time that Izumi has been open, I have also seen the prices go up which really isn’t going to help their cause. It’s such a shame because it’s wasted opportunity in Japanese dining- something which is much needed in the West!
It isn’t all bad news though. There’s one dish which keeps me coming back to Izumi and it’s their Chicken Katsu Curry, which is actually pretty good value compared to everything else on the menu. It’s delicious-tender and juicy and I love the katsu curry sauce which is full of flavour.
Definitely worth a go if you’re a local. But probably only for that one dish.
Must have dishes:
– Chicken Katsu Curry, although the Bentos are quite nice too if you’re willing to spend the money
Tips & Tricks
- There’s no need to book, it’s almost always empty!
- Don’t get the Kani Cream Croquettes- far too mushy and the crab is basically non-existant
- Take-away is slow
